Discover the world of mountaineering and the new temporary exhibition, "Alpine Refuges"
Located in the heart of St. Christophe, just a stone’s throw from the cemetery where the famous mountain guides of La Bérarde and Le Vénéon, as well as many renowned mountaineers, are buried, the museum is dedicated to all mountain enthusiasts. This space, nestled in the heart of the mountains, aims to evoke both the history of mountaineering in the Écrins Massif and the intense emotions associated with this sport—which is synonymous with adventure, commitment, passion, and freedom.
The exhibition “Alpine Refuges: From Makeshift Shelters to High-Altitude Tourism” traces the history and evolution of mountain refuges, from their humble origins as temporary shelters to their current role in high-altitude tourism. It highlights human ingenuity in the face of high-mountain challenges and the importance of these structures for mountaineers and hikers. Six galleries await you across more than 400 square meters.
