Cross-country skiing at Arselle, a Nordic getaway

In the heart of the Belledonne massif, the Arselle plateau in Chamrousse offers an exceptional setting for a day of cross-country skiing. With trails suitable for all levels, you can explore enchanting, snow-covered forests and enjoy breathtaking panoramas. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and let yourself be drawn into a truly unique experience in the Alps.

The winter light gently pierces the morning mist floating over the Arselle plateau.

At an altitude of 1,600 metres, the vast white expanse awakens in hushed silence, disturbed only by the crunch of snow beneath the skis of the first cross-country skiers. The plateau stretches lazily, offering a glimpse of the Taillefer and Vercors peaks in the distance, providing the ideal playground for immersing yourself in the Nordic world.

A day on the Arselle plateau is an immersion into a preserved environment, an experience where sport and contemplation blend harmoniously.

The call of the trail

The sun’s rays cast delicate shadows on the groomed trail. The parallel tracks of cross-country skis elegantly streak across the surface, a silent invitation to glide across the white carpet. The crisp, pure mountain air fills your lungs, while your gaze is lost in the immensity of the landscape. The fir trees, silent sentinels, line the plateau with their dark and reassuring silhouettes.

With every metre covered, the plateau reveals its secrets. Skiing becomes active meditation, each pole push setting the rhythm for a dance with nature. Movements flow smoothly, the body finding its natural rhythm. Your skating technique naturally improves, aided by the quality of the snow and the impeccable layout of the slopes.

Nature’s grand theatre

Throughout the day, the plateau is transformed beautifully by the changing light. Shadows stretch across the snow, silhouettes dance against the backdrop of the mountains, and the surrounding peaks are adorned with a crystalline sparkle. The spruce forest itself comes alive, playing with light and shadow in an ever-shifting scene.

The panorama offers a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains, with spectacular sights of the snow-capped peaks of Taillefer.

The pistes of the Arselle Nordic ski area wind through this magnificent setting, alternating between passages through the woods and sunny clearings.

The layout of the slopes is suitable for all levels, allowing for smooth progression. Beginners can find their balance on the gentle green loops, while more experienced skiers can venture onto more technical courses.

The less-travelled trails invite exploration, leading to unspoilt corners of the plateau. Nature reveals itself subtly: animal tracks in the fresh snow, branches bending under their immaculate load, and ice crystals sparkling in the low light.

When the sun reaches its zenith, the air is pleasantly warm, almost making you forget the invigorating morning chill. The snow sparkles brightly, creating a mesmerising spectacle. Cross-country skiers glide silently – some skating in a technical and rhythmic ballet, others alternating their steps and savouring the tranquillity of the place.

As the sun begins to set, the plateau is bathed in golden hues.

The atmosphere becomes almost surreal, with the low-angled light transforming every contour into an ephemeral work of art. Shadows lengthen across the snow, creating fascinating patterns that change minute by minute.

The intensifying cold hardens the snow, providing perfect skiing conditions for these final moments on the plateau.

As the day draws to a close, the sky is adorned with stunning pastel colours, and the plateau gently falls asleep.

Only the tracks in the snow remain, a silent record of the day’s journeys, fleeting stories that will disappear with the next snowfall.
