A pleasant hike on the mountain pastures near Gresse en Vercors is possible! Just head for the Pas du Serpaton. This hike offers an ideal setting for family outings and picnics. It's an instructive place to learn about life on the mountain pastures and the role of shepherds. Just a stone's throw from the village of Gresse en Vercors, this hike will give you a chance to get up close and personal with the cows that make their home here during the summer months.

Route details

Departure point: From the "Gresse en Vercors" signpost (next to the tourist information office).

1) Follow the "La casse" signpost along the road beside the church. Turn left onto the D8a towards the northern exit of the village. After a few hundred meters, find the "La casse" signpost.

2) From the "La casse" signpost, first take the tarmac road, then continue on a pleasant forest track. Follow the path, which then becomes a good climb. At the top, turn left onto the tarmac road. Continue a little further to the Serpaton parking lot (here you'll have a magnificent view of the Vercors). Observe the remains of an old cable that once carried milk up and down the mountain. Enter the mountain pasture and take the road up to the summit (1km). Pass the sheepfold and enjoy the view. Take time to observe the mountain pastures with their cows and mountain flowers. Once you reach the summit (signposted "Pas du Serpaton"), you'll have a bird's-eye view of the Belledonne, Ecrins and Dévoluy massifs. Enjoy the panoramic view!

3) Take the path in the opposite direction. Go downhill and observe the hall-like building. Enter the building, where you'll find an exhibition retracing the history of the mountain pasture. Then return to the main path and follow it all the way down to the "La Casse" signpost.

4) From "La Casse", turn left onto the main road back to the village of Gresse en Vercors. Pass behind the church to reach the starting point.
