Archives Départementales de l'Isère
The mission of the Archives départementales de l'Isère is to collect, classify, preserve and make available to the public the written heritage of the Isère department and the former province of Dauphiné.
Our missions:
CONTROL
Under the authority of the Prefect, the Director of the Archives Départementales, a State curator, is responsible for the scientific and technical control of public archives. As such, any document disposal must be submitted to him for approval. The department also helps government departments, local authorities, public establishments and private bodies entrusted with a public service mission to manage their files.
COLLECT
Public archives must be transferred to the Archives départementales by the administrative departments that produced or inherited them. Private archives can enrich the department's heritage: they are deposited, donated or sold by families, associations or companies.
CONSERVE
The many millions of documents collected over the last two centuries need to be preserved in the best possible conditions. Some documents are microfilmed because of their fragility, others are being restored, but most are kept in our stores where temperature and hygrometry are controlled, protected from light and dust.
CLASSIFY
It's not enough just to conserve, we also need to make this heritage accessible to everyone. A meticulous and time-consuming process of sorting, classifying and disposing of documents provides researchers with inventories and directories to help them find their way through this enormous mass of documentation.
COMMUNICATE
Genealogists, local history buffs, academics, private individuals looking for information on their rights, public authorities: every year, more than 2,500 readers come to our reading room to consult over 25,000 documents. They are welcomed and advised by Archives staff.
VALUE
Making all these documents known is also part of our mission, through conferences, round tables, exhibitions, hands-on workshops...
