Place Grenette
As in many towns, the square known as Place Grenette owes its name to the weekly grain market that used to take place under the market building that once stood here. The square was re-baptised in 1978 with its original name, which dates from the 18th century.
The old market hall was located at the centre of Place Grenette. The first signs of its existence date back to 1276.
The building comprised three bays and a large entrance gate. It had a vast, two-slope timber roof frame which was covered in thackstone.
The framework rested on sixteen wooden pillars which in turn rested on pyramid-shaped stone bases. In 1872, the town council decided to demolish the market building, which had been in a poor state of repair since 1783, and the site was converted into a public square.
The council sold the materials retrieved from the demolition and purchased eight stone cubes for the total sum of 40 francs. These integral components of the local heritage are scattered across the old town (near the library, for example).
