Saint Peter's Church in Les Avenières

  • Historic site and monument

This church dedicated to St Peter was built in 1832, when the church square took on its current layout with the building of a wall to support the terrace on which it stands.
The church organ has 1,472 pipes.

The church was originally built with a flat ceiling supported by large square columns but this design was replaced by brickwork vaults following the ogival bay principle.
The ceiling gives the church its harmonious dimensions: 40 metres in length (including the chancel's 13.4 metres), 19.2 metres in width and a height of 13.4 metres under the centre-nave vault. Inside, the building's walls and columns are adorned with numerous canvas paintings.
But the real surprise is the church organ, which was built in 1874 by the organ-builders Merklin.
