Uriage-les-Bains: thermal water & wellness in the French Alps
Although not all mountain roads in Isère lead to Uriage-les-Bains, this small town has reinvented itself as an essential stop on any perfect itinerary to discover the pleasures of the mountains.
With its timeless charm, Uriage-les-Bains combines an ideal geographical location with special offers that allow visitors to enjoy the many benefits of its renowned thermal water.
A spa resort with old-fashioned charm
After a day on the slopes of the Olympic resort Chamrousse, I couldn’t resist extending my stay before descending to the capital of the Alps. With the sun still shining on the pistes, it was the perfect moment for a mid-journey pause on the Uriage plateau.
Even on the way up to the peaks this morning, I was struck by the beauty of the town’s architecture – an elegant mix of neoclassical buildings and Channel Islands-style villas.
The resort, primarily dating from the late 19th century during the golden age of thermalism, stands as a testament to its heyday, which spurred the construction of these superb edifices.
Water recognised for thousands of years
As is often the case, it was the Romans who first recognised the exceptional qualities of this water. It springs from the ground at a constant temperature of 28°C.
Enriched with a remarkably high concentration of minerals and trace elements, gained from its journey through the mineral depths of the Belledonne massif, this water possesses beneficial properties that are highly valued in medicine and dermatology.
Today, the life-giving benefits of this unique thermal water are available in a wide range of products, not only within the region but also internationally.
It would be a shame not to take advantage of these exceptional riches when they’re just a stone’s throw away. A quick phone call was all it took to arrange an appointment. A convenient bus stops right next to the entrance of the grand hotel, which not only houses the renowned spa where I was expected but also a celebrated restaurant.
A whole host of feel-good treatments
The huge bay windows slide open to the hall, where a stunning monumental spiral staircase takes centre stage, leading to the establishment’s elegant rooms.
A small adjoining door opens onto the spa reception area with a warm. welcoming atmosphere.
Customers waiting on the sofas are clearly regulars.
A hostess explains the various options available
Everything is customisable and can be combined to enhance well-being.
Following expert advice, I treat myself to a massage under thermal water, carried out by a physiotherapist.
This is to be followed by a clay wrap blended with the prized water. In a hushed atmosphere – here the rule is to whisper – I head to the treatment room. A few candles are placed around, I sit on the bed, and the magic can begin…
Wellness à la carte
Using a perfect mix of strength and gentleness, José, the physiotherapist, alternates between applying pressure and light massages under a warm and soothing shower of water.
It’s a chance to take some time out, completely detached from the world around you.
Clay & water
This passes so quickly that it is soon time to try out the mud therapy in the adjoining space, under the expert hands of Suzanne.
She begins by applying the 43°C warm mud to the back of the neck, before applying it all over the body. While this treatment is recommended for dermatological issues and for treating osteoarthritis and rheumatism, it is also highly recommended for simply pampering yourself!
During the twenty minutes that the mixture is left to work, you will be lulled into a semi-sleep, cradled by soft music.
Relaxation with a view
I gradually come back to my senses, ready to enjoy the two swimming pools, one indoor and one outdoor, available to guests. But before that, mint tea is on offer in the relaxation room, on a deckchair facing the huge Uriage park and its century-old trees, in absolute peace and tranquillity.
Then it’s time for a few lengths with this fabulous view. Looking up into the garden, I can see the treetops that I was hurtling past just a few hours ago!
Indoors - Outdoors
To finish off the visit, you can choose between a session in the sauna or the hammam. Then all that remains is to take a refreshing shower, before swimming in the indoor pool and floating in total relaxation. A short walk in the park is the perfect end to this visit to Uriage.
It’s a wonderful day of self-care, surrounded by mountains, in complete relaxation.
