Trapper outing in Sappey-en-Chartreuse
A few turns above Grenoble, we put on our snowshoes for a trip in the footsteps of Jack London, in Les Emeindras, in the heart of the Chartreuse Natural Park.
With a tribe on the mountain pastures of the Chartreuse
We set off early in the morning from La Croix du Rocher in the village of Sappey-en-Chartreuse (just above the cross-country ski centre car park), before sinking, step by step, into the powder snow between the tall fir trees. In this muffled silence, all you can hear is the steady crunch of snowshoes. Luckily, it snowed heavily the day before and the white blanket is still untouched. We have fun examining the tracks of a rabbit that has just run away: four footprints, two of which are deeper. “With their hind legs, they don’t need snowshoes!”

Little by little, the summit of Chamechaude, this giant towering over the Chartreuse massif at an altitude of 2,080 metres, just above their heads, sheds its veil of mist.
The sun has just passed over the ridges and makes the meadow sparkle as it rises gently towards a large track. The small group continues its climb along the path leading to the hamlet of Montjalat and its meadows, which offer a beautiful view of the village.
Arriving at Montjalat-le-haut, they turn right and head into the undergrowth.
