Saint Martin's Church
Overlooking the Hien valley from the top of its elegant steeple, visible from miles away, the church of Doissin, located in its former cemetery, stands out for its remarkable early 16th-century choir, originally built as a family chapel.
The church is accessed directly from the road via a masonry facade of pebbles and tiles, with a door surmounted by a surprising Renaissance shell niche and oculus. Inside, the nave (covered by a ceiling) and chapels are articulated in very simple volumes. The nave, with a single bay on each side, features a gallery served by a wooden staircase with load-bearing stringcourse, set against the walls. The chapels, which open onto two large semi-circular arches facing each other, also have a single bay.
The remarkable choir is a late 15th-century foundation chapel, the only remaining part of the medieval church, covered by a ribbed vault with liernes and tiercerons, and opening out to the north and east through a large infill bay and oculus. Both the roof and openings are in the spirit of the flamboyant Gothic style. The vault features remarkable heraldic decoration. The keystones feature different, delicately carved rosettes, with five shields of arms in the center. It should be noted, however, that the composition and ornamental paterns on the capitals of the columns supporting the vault ribs in the corners are fully belong to the Renaissance's art. To the north-west, a door that once gave access to the exterior is surmounted by a hammered coat of arms. Today, it gives access to a covered intermediate space encompassing the lower part of the bell tower and the door leading to it.
Visible from afar, the elegant bell tower - with its openwork belfry and four neo-Gothic geminated bays - adjoins the choir, but is not attached to it.
The building has been awarded the "Patrimoine en Isère" label,
which recognizes the heritage quality of a building of departmental interest.
