The St Géraud Lookout
Accessible on foot, the Saint-Géraud chapel and its belvedere offer a pleasant walk with a panoramic view of the glaciers.
A 20-minute walk from the resort, or a 10-minute walk from the hamlet of Cluy, leads to the Saint-Géraud chapel and its panoramic view of the glaciers.
Built in the 7th century, this chapel pays homage to Géraud d'Aurillac, an Auvergne nobleman turned monk, famous for his piety and numerous pilgrimages across the Alps to Rome. During his Alpine crossings, local tradition records three stages of his passage: Catuserias, probably Bourg-d'Oisans or La Garde, Mulsedunum, which corresponds to Mizoën, and Abricolam, probably the former name of Auris.
It was in the heights of Auris that a small oratory was built to honor his memory. It later became the chapel we know today.
Until recently, the people of Auris celebrated a feast day in his honor every October 13, the date of Saint Geraud's death. A solemn mass was held in the chapel, bringing together families from neighboring hamlets.
The chapel has undergone several restoration campaigns, most notably in 1969, when a first rehabilitation saved it from abandonment. Then in 2012, a new restoration was carried out, in parallel with that of the Saint-Ilpise de Cluy chapel.
