The ViaRhôna route through the Balcons du Dauphiné
The Via Rhôna is an 815 km cycle route linking Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean, running alongside the River Rhône. The route alternates between safe cycle paths and shared-use paths. It crosses the Balcons du Dauphiné for nearly 60 km.
Set amongst the untamed Rhône, unspoilt countryside and charming villages, the ViaRhôna invites you to discover the Balcons du Dauphiné in a whole new light. Nearly 60 km of cycle routes criss-cross the region, offering a wonderful variety of landscapes, heritage sites and atmospheres across three stages.
From Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers to Groslée, cycle alongside the River Rhône and follow the French Haut-Rhône National Nature Reserve. Make the most of this first stage to stop off at the discovery trail exploring the former Saugey meander. Greenways and cycle paths punctuate this route between the river and the countryside.
From Groslée to La Balme-les-Grottes, the ViaRhôna briefly leaves the Rhône behind to venture into the heart of the lush green landscapes of the Balcons du Dauphiné. This rural stage takes you, in particular, to Morestel, the famous ‘City of Painters’, and past numerous sensitive natural areas. Ponds, lakes, marshes and cliffs create a setting perfect for taking a break and simply enjoying the view.
On arrival, a visit to the Grottes de la Balme is a must to discover one of the 7 wonders of the Dauphiné.
From La Balme-les-Grottes to Jons, continue your journey towards Lyon, passing through authentic villages, castles and vineyard landscapes. In Anthon, take the time to explore this remarkable natural site where the Ain meets the Rhône, before following the Jonage Canal and reaching the Grand Parc de Miribel-Jonage.
Please be aware, however, of heavy traffic between Loyettes and Jons.
