Triptychs of "Notre Dame de l'Assomption" Church

  • Historic site and monument

Two triptychs are visible in this church: a sixteenth century's one representing the crucifixion, attributed to a pupil of Dürer for a long time, and another one, "Visit of the East Magi", created by the contemporary painter Arcabas.

This work from the 16th century is an isérois religious heritage jewel. Long attributed to a student of Dürer, this Renaissance work, classified as a historical monument, delivers a masterful interpretation of the crucifixion: the two movable sides represent the ascent of Christ at the calvary and the descent from the cross. The central panel unfolds the lamentation while the reverse offers the enigmatic vision of a reclining draped in his shroud. The exceptional character of this work in the regional artistic landscape, its unusual dimensions and the passionate interest it has aroused, surround the mystery painting.

The triptych from the XXI century by the painter Arcabas is another remarkable work, commissioned by the city. "Visit of the East Magi" recalls the story of the Magi adoration in a lush symphony of colors that celebrates the birth joy. At the inauguration, in 2001, Arcabas, great master of contemporary sacred art, addressed his late colleague: "450 years separate these two works but there is no chasm between them because art is immutable!"
