Vertrieu heritage itinerary

  • Pedestrian sports
  • Course

Less than an hour from Lyon, discover the historic center of Saint-Chef, with its abbey church and famous 12th-century Romanesque frescoes. It's also the village of Frédéric Dard and a land of Balmes Dauphinoises IGP wine.

On the heritage trail, you'll find some of the town's most important landmarks:

- The modern château and the fortified house (private): the former, listed as a Historic Monument, invites you to take a stroll through its formal gardens (open from 1 May to 14 July), while the latter dominates the village and is considered to be one of the most authentic fortified houses still standing in the region.

- Le jardin des simples: ideal for a bucolic break in the centre of the village. Come and discover plants with your family. Its name is a reference to the Middle Ages, when "simples" were medicinal plants that only apothecaries were qualified to use.

- The ice-house: discover the forerunner of the refrigerator, a stone and slate aedicula dating from 1716!

- Enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the historic town, the Rhône and the Bugey cliffs as you climb to the Serverin cross.

- And much more besides...
