Vienna and its ancient Theatre

Whether you are an art or history buff, a foodie or someone seeking new experiences, ‘Little Rome’ will surprise and intrigue you. The jewel in the crown of this rich heritage, the Ancient Theatre dominates the city and offers an ideal vantage point!

Vienna, Austria? No, Vienne, capital of the Allobroges! Nestled between the Isère and Rhône rivers, the Vienne Condrieu region is shaped by its history: vineyards cultivated for millennia, a section of Roman wall hidden between two buildings, a cathedral standing proudly on the banks of the Rhône River, a temple and an ancient theater—majestic and steeped in history…

Built between 40 and 50 AD, the ancient theater follows the semicircular shape of Pipet Hill, against which it rests. This monument, dedicated to entertainment and the glory of Rome, is one of the most significant ruins in all of Roman Gaul.

Rediscovered in the early 20th century thanks to extensive excavation and restoration work, this Gallo-Roman treasure rivals the greatest theaters of Rome. Its vast semicircular auditorium, comprising 46 tiers, once seated up to 13,500 spectators.

Even today, it comes alive every summer during the famous Jazz à Vienne festival, which brings together nearly 8,000 music lovers in an exceptional setting, enhanced by a recent restoration completed in 2020. The venue harmoniously blends heritage and emotion, creating unforgettable evenings under the open sky.

From the tiers, the show doesn’t end there: a breathtaking panorama unfolds before you. The Rhône River, the city, the terraced vineyards, and the peaks of Mont Pilat paint a vivid and majestic picture. Below, the ruins of the Odeon, nestled at the foot of Mont Saint-Just, serve as a reminder of the cultural richness of ancient Vienne.

Then look up toward the north: the ruins of the Château de la Bâtie proudly overlook the Rhône from Mont Salomon. And for an even more spectacular view, head to the Mont Pipet lookout point. Up there, bathed in light, you’ll be captivated by the beauty of the red rooftops, the gentle slopes of the Côte-Rôtie vineyards, and the rolling horizon of the Pilat Mountains.

A moment outside of time, where history meets poetry.
